Princeton University's Leonard L. Milberg ’53 HIGH SCHOOL POETRY PRIZE First Prize:$500 Second Prize:$250 Third Prize:$100 Online Submission Deadline: November 30, 2018 Princeton University’s Program in Creative Writing is now accepting submissions for the Leonard L. Milberg ’53 High School Poetry Prize. The contest is open to students in the eleventh grade in the U.S. and abroad during the 2018-19 academic year. Applicants may submit up to three poems. Each page should include the applicant's name, home address, email address, and telephone number, as well as the name of the high school and the school's telephone number. For more information and online submission visit: arts.princeton.edu/poetrycontest Submission deadline: Friday, Nov. 30 at 12 midnight EST Contest judges are poets on the Princeton University Creative Writing faculty, which includes Michael Dickman, Alex Dimitrov, Paul Muldoon, Alicia Ostriker, Rowan Ricardo Phillips, James Richardson, Patrick Rosal, Tracy K. Smith, Susan Wheeler, Jenny Xie, and Monica Youn. The winning poems and results will be announced on the Princeton University Program in Creative Writing website in spring 2019. A note for high school teachers: Thank you for your interest in the Leonard L. Milberg ’53 High School Poetry Prize. While we encourage the inclusion of poetry in the high school English curriculum, we ask you to please refrain from using the contest as an occasion to require all your students to submit a poem as a homework assignment. If you read the poems from the past student winners, you’ll see that they all carry a sense of urgency and necessity that is difficult to conjure when a student is obliged to submit a poem. Ideally, we hope motivated students will choose to enter the contest, and that they’ll come to see the writing and sharing of their poems as a joy rather than an obligation.

Thanks, Coach Koonce for the Cross Country Update! "CROSS COUNTRY competed on Tuesday at the Bald Knob Invitational. There were 112 runners in the varsity girls division, 137 runners in the varsity boys, 123 in the junior high girls, and 134 in the junior high boys. This was another competitive meet with a tough course. We used this meet to supplement a meet that was cancelled at Star City in September. I saw this as an opportunity to run against kids that we never see, including a number of schools that we will see at our state meet. This was our first race with a complete team in the varsity girls division, and we placed 10th overall, 5th in the large school division. Melanie Miller continues to be our leader with this group, and Alivia Zartuche had her best race of the year; I was very happy with both of those girls yesterday. It is good to finally have a result as a full team and no where we need to improve. With the way these girls work, there is no doubt that improvement will come now that we have a tangible goal. The varsity boys were runner up to North Little Rock in the big school division (4A and up) and third overall behind Cave City and North Little Rock. There were 6 schools in the upper division, and 13 in the meet. We knew coming into it that North Little Rock and Parkview were going to be the major competition in the upper classification division and we fell just short of North Little Rock. We were happy with the fact that we were able to beat Parkview, Marion, and Pulaski Academy who were the teams from our classification at the meet. We knew coming in that this was going to be a very competitive meet with a razor thin margin between a few teams and the boys left it all on the course. Jaland Upshaw, who is normally our five runner, went lame with a hip injury about halfway through the race, and Hudson McDiarmid went out a little too fast and burned out the last mile. We will be able to use this as a lesson in Hudson's case and have a better strategy going forward. Jadon and Brooks had excellent races, with Jadon breaking into the top 10 of a loaded field. The junior girls placed 7th out of 11 teams represented. Addy Taylor and Alexa Dewey lead the way once again. They continue to improve as they wind their junior high season down. Austin Richard and Nic Harvey lead the way with the Junior boys team that placed 12th out of 15 teams in the junior boys division. Austin and Nic have been neck and neck the past two weeks with Calvin Huang and Edwin Gonzalez just behind them. This team has been improving the past month due to their competitive nature. We will race tomorrow at the Lake Hamilton Invitational at Oaklawn Park."

Student Essay/Speaking Contest – entry deadline Oct. 26th NEW THIS YEAR: The Arkansas School Boards Association is holding a personal essay/speaking contest where 11th and 12th grade students will have an opportunity to present before an audience of more than 600 school board members and administrators during the ASBA Annual Conference, held December 5-7, 2018 at the Marriott Hotel and Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock. The purpose for this contest is two-fold. First, it is designed to give Arkansas juniors and seniors an opportunity to express creative ideas and concepts, conduct research, think critically, practice public speaking skills and subsequently receive recognition for doing so. Secondly, it’s an opportunity for Annual Conference attendees to see and hear examples of the quality of young men and women the schools within our state are producing. Three student winners will present at designated times December 6 & 7 during ASBA's Annual conference and will also receive cash prizes as follows: 1st Place: $1000 2nd Place: $750 3rd place: $500 Honorable Mention: $250 ESSAY/SPEECH TOPIC Can and Should Freedom of Expression and Civility Co-exist? In the name of the First Amendment and the freedom of expression it guarantees, rancorous rhetoric is fast becoming more common place across our country, causing many to wonder if it’s any longer safe or beneficial to engage in democratic discourse. Is there a way to participate in conversations where various opinions and options for solving problems of common concern, weighing alternatives, resolving differences and co-existing without acrimony and hostility are possible? Is practicing civility (reasoned public discourse where respect, restraint, responsibility, and empathy coexist with free expression) still as important as self-governance, freedom of expression and individual dignity or does civility hamper free expression? Click here for detailed contest instructions, incentives and rules. http://arsba.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/ESSAY-SPEECH-CONTEST-RULES-GUIDELINES.pdf The contest deadline is Friday, October 26, 2018.
